Understanding Cattle Summary
  • To move an animal forward in the chute or alley, stand behind the point of the shoulder.
  • Avoid loud noises and sudden movements.
  • To back an animal, move ahead of the shoulder.
  • When an animal rears up in the chute, back off.
  • Don't wrestle, beat or shout at an animal.
  • Avoid use of sticks, canes and hot shots. These can cause serious bruising as well as create a negative experience to make you and the cattle want to avoid work day.
  • If you have a bad experience, think it through and try to determine how you could have prevented it using these principles.
